Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (110g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup (105g) light brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/3 cup (175g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 1/4 cup chopped candy (tiny bite-sized pieces), plus more for the top
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
  • Flaky sea salt, for sprinkling on top

Instructions

  1. Chop the candy intended for topping and place it in the freezer (not including the 1 1/4 cup for inside the bars).
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and line an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter, light brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Then, add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
  5. Fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture using a rubber spatula, followed by the chopped candies.
  6. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan, then top with dark chocolate chips to create a good cover.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Once baked, remove the pan from the oven and immediately add the candy from the freezer on top of the melted chocolate chips.
  9. Sprinkle a generous pinch of flaky sea salt on top, then refrigerate the bars for about 30 minutes or until cool to the touch.
  10. Lift the cooled bars out of the pan, slice, and enjoy your delicious treats!
